Fat injection into the vocal folds can be utilized to improve voice quality in cases of soft tissue defects of the vocal folds present from birth- such as vergeture or sulcus vocalis- or scars and lack od soft tissue consequent to surgery performed for benign or malignant lesions.
Fat augmentation allows to increase the volume of the vocal fold improving closure of the vocal folds during phonation, but at the same time enhances elasticity of the superficial gliding tissue, which is missing in scarred and malformed areas. The fluctuating mucosal wave originating in the superficial gliding layer of the vocal fold can improve its amplitude and give raise to a better voice sound. The combined use of microfat (microfragments of autologous adipose tissue) and nanofat technique (emulsion of adipose tissue) is promising to enhance the results of vocal fold scars’ treatment.
